In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, without initially offer further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
This event occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major events preceding this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
